The Solvent Extraction plant has a capacity of 420 Ton per day of crushed feed which contains approx 80 Ton of oil. 99% of the oil is recovered by the solvent extraction process with the meal product being returned to the Meal section and the oil returned to the Reﬁning section.
The plant is located directly between the Grain Crushing plant and the new Solvents Extraction plant. A vapor wall is in place between the old and new Solvents Extraction plants and the Grain Crushing plant is separated by a Brick or concrete wall.
The De Smet Extraction Plant can be used for various operations for extracting oils from ﬂakes of meal by use of a solvent. In this case the extraction is oil from Canola is by use of Hexane over an extraction process.
Percolation of the solvent through the seed mass occurs in the moving bed extractor in a countercurrent multi-stage continuous contact process resulting in the miscella (oil/Hexane mixture) becoming richer in oil. The solvent ratio can be adjusted independently of the meal supply. The extractor operates under a small vacuum. The Extractor consists of Extractor Belt; Drive Assembly; Bed Height control: Stage Pumps and Sprinklers, Rakes; Scraper; Belt Rinse Sprays and Hopers and Troughs. Separation occurs with the Scrapper Wheel taking the deoiled meal from the miscella. The meal is sent to the desolventization section and the miscella moves to a distillation section.
Desolventization and Toasting (DT)
The extracted meal leaves the extractor with approx 30-35% solvent. To produce a marketable meal the solvent is recovered in the Desolventiser/Toaster/Drier/Cooler system. The pre-desolventisation of stage 1 removes approx 35% of the Hezane vapors at a temperature of approx 70-80 Deg C and is mostly done with jacket steam.
The desolventization occurs in the next 2 stages at approx 110 to 115 Deg C with help of jacket steam Stripping in the ﬁfth stage where open steam is passed through the dried meal. The 6th stage is for drying of the meal by drying air at 50 Deg C.
The ﬁnal stage is the cooling stage by use of air at ambient conditions.
The meal is then sent to cyclone to separate the air, meal and dust. The separated meal is discharged through a rotary valve to the meal conveyor which then leaves the Extraction plant.
A wastewater scrubber sprays vapours from the DT section hot water at a minimum of 85 Deg C and uses a ﬂow-stage scrubber to to remove dust from the output.
The miscella from the Extraction section containing approx 20 -25% oil is introduced to the distillation section to boil oﬀ the Hexane and goes through a ﬁrst stage evaporator-separator; a second stage evaporation and ﬁnally a stripping process. Distilling temperatures are aprox 110 Deg C through use of steam sparging. Condensers are used to lower the output temperature to approx 4-5 Deg C. Solvent concentration after the process is approx 1%.
Three 15 Ton hexane tanks are located in a sunken area below ground at the western end of the plant. These vessels are easily recovered.
Cooling Water Tower
The cooling water unit is a stand alone Sulzer EWK 630/06 unit.
Three 15 Ton oil storage tanks are located at the eastern end of the plant. The vessels are easily recovered.
