The Isopropyl Alcohol Synthesis consists of the esterification of the propylene with sulfuric acid in liquid phase and the subsequent hydrolysis of the Isopropyl Acid Sulphate with water, obtaining the Alcohol that is sent to the tanks of deposit of Crude and Sulfuric Alcohol that is sent to the Acid Concentration Plant, to be used again in the Synthesis.
The 75% SO4H2 and the Cutting of Gas C3 containing propylene (approximately 50%) are pumped to the reactors, there by the effect of the mixing that intimately mixes them and the temperature, the SO4H2 molecule is added on the double ligature.
The mixture leaving the reactor enters a decanter where it is separated into two phases, the upper phase co nsisting of unreacted Propane+ Propylene, goes to a lung tank and from there to a pressure evaporator.
In this equipment, the gas evaporates in a caustic liquor,thus achieving the dual purpose of neutralizing acidic residues and purifying the gas by evaporation. The vapors or residual neutralized LPG feeds Column 1400. In this the LPG (C3) and Polymers (CS+) are separated. For this,indirect steam heating is used through a reboiler. The Polymers are retained at the bottom of the column at 90/95°C temperature .The top distillate, LPG, at 45/ 58°C, after passing through the condensers and chillers, is stored in LPG for later return as C3-C.
The ester that separates in the decanter is mixed with water to cause the hydrolysis reaction (dilution to 38-39% in acid}
The hydrolysis reaction takes place in two stages, the first is carried out in a prehydrolyzer at a softer temperature (75-80°C), with most of the ester being converted to alcohol. To complete the reaction and at the same time to separate the alcohol from the acid, the mixture is pumped from the prehydrolyzer to a FeSi tower, where by direct steam injection the temperature is raised, that is to say under more drastic conditions, the last fractions are hydrolyzed.ester that were missing, the steam injection also causes the distillation of alcohol vapors, which come out from the head of the tower .The S04H2 exits through the queue returned to the sulfuric plant for reconcentration since the excess water required in the hydrolysis reaction diluted it to 40-42%.
The alcohol vapors pass through a neutralization column and, once neutralized, they are cooled and sent to the storage tank where they are stored until distillation.
